The top stars make use of the perfect conditions

on the Renon ice rink.

Collalbo, 11 December 2018 - As soon as the probably fastest open-air ice rink in the world was back in operation in Collalbo, the top stars of the international speed skating scene gathered again in South Tyrol. In the past few days the Dutch team Jumbo Schaatsen and the national teams of Russia and Norway trained on the high plateau. One month before the Allround European Championships (11 to 13 January 2019), which will take place for the third time on Renon, the elite were able to see the excellent ice conditions for themselves.
Olympic champions, Olympic medallists, World champions: almost everyone who is someone in the European ice speed skating scene spent the last few days perfecting their fitness on Renon. The renowned Dutch team Jumbo Schaatsen arrived with its top stars Sven Kramer, Kjeld Nuis, Patrick Roest, Antoinette de Jong and Carlijn Achtereekte. In addition to various training sessions on ice, the athletes also covered miles and miles on their racing bikes, cycling for example from the provincial capital up to Collalbo. In addition to the Dutch athletes, the figureheads from the national teams of Russia and Norway also came to train in the South Tyrolean Mecca of speed skating.
Figureheads who will be battling it out on Renon for European Championships medals in just over a month. From 11 to 13 of January the European Champion will be determined in the allround and in the sprint combination respectively. The search is on for the successors to Sven Kramer and Ireen Wüst from the Netherlands, who won gold in Heerenveen in 2017 and will start as the defending champions. Winners in the sprint combination had been Kai Verbij from the Netherlands and Karolina Erbanova from the Czechia.

There are still tickets available
"We are of course very happy that the stars seem to be drawn to us on Renon throughout the whole of winter. On the one hand they find excellent conditions here, on the other hand they can already get in the swing for the European Championships. As far as the preparations for the major sporting event are concerned, everything a month ahead is going according to plan" explained Chair of the Organising Committee Jakob Gamper, who has been preparing for the European Championships in Collalbo with his dedicated team for over a year.
The only sticking point 30 days before the first competitions, are the rather sluggish ticket sales. "We want to offer the best speed skaters in Europe a great atmosphere and plenty of excited spectators. We therefore hope that many more fans from abroad will join us. I can also wholeheartedly recommend the competitions on Renon to sport loving South Tyroleans! The event will be exciting and top quality”, promised Chair of the Organising Committee Gamper. If you want to be a spectator you can buy day tickets on the platform the price of 25 Euros. The event ticket, that permits access on all three days of the competition, is available at 65 Euros. Children up to 6 years watch for free.

Renon supports the European Championships
There is no doubt that the people of Renon are looking forward to “their” title fights. Many residents are involved as voluntary helpers, and on the other hand many local companies support the organisers financially as sponsors. "I would like to thank all the volunteers now, because without their support we would never be able to hold an event like the European Speed Skating Championships. And of course we also need financial support, and so I would like to express my special thanks to the country of South Tyrol, the Raika Ritten, the municipality of Renon, the Forst Brewery, the Hotel Bemelmans-Post, the Parkhotel Holzner and the Hotel Lichtenstern, and all other partners and sponsors”, Gamper concluded.
